Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

I used to do Valentine’s Day. I used to do it in my own way too; meaning you would NEVER get a standard vase of red roses, baby’s breath, and leatherleaf fern. If you've been here for long enough, you know that nothing is the status quo in terms of running a flower business. We are breaking the mold and that’s how I like it!  But I digress.

I used to spend my January ordering flowers and making and photographing Valentine’s Day designs that were a little out of the box. I had fun. I ordered fancy garden roses, I did fun colors, I spent a lot of money. I ordered all those flowers again in February to design flowers for local orders and Valentine’s Day pop ups.  It was great to be able to serve current customers and meet new ones, but also pretty stressful. Flowers are expensive, y’all and freezing February temps make things even more fun to navigate! I learned a lot from doing that for a couple years; and needless to say, I’ve retired from fresh flowers for Valentine’s Day…at least unless I decide to grow them myself ;)

This year for Valentine’s Day, you can catch me in Florida - actually, change of plans.  My husband broke his leg and we are putting our travel plans on hold.  You can catch me playing nursemaid while garden planning!  I also just want to make a more conscious choice to be more true to my “roots” by offering a sustainable option for flower lovers.

Spring and Summer flower subscriptions and flower gift cards are three easy ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day sustainably.  Locally grown spring and summer flowers have a much lower carbon footprint than imports, they are free of harmful chemicals and pesticides, and they are GOOD for our ecosystems.  There is no plastic wrapping, no cardboard boxes, and no actual trash associated with these flower options either.  Subscriptions make a great gift for a local person who loves flowers; we have pick up options in Manitou Beach, Morenci, and Brooklyn Michigan this season. Also, our flower gift cards can be used toward ANYTHING in our online shop including; fresh flower bouquets, design workshops, open farm night events, apparel, and even wreath and holiday events.  Lastly, our new apparel is available for order - items will not ship before Valentine’s Day, but an apparel order would make a nice gift as well.

However you choose to celebrate the love in your life (or yourself, because, girl you are worth it!), let Black Dog Flower Co. be a sustainable way to celebrate.  And if you are itching for locally grown flowers from our farm, we can expect the first batch of magical smelling apricot daffodils to bloom around mid-April and then the beauty won’t stop until fall.

Thank you for investing in a dream, in joy and beauty, and in a sustainable gift that is good for the earth.

With LOVE,

Dana
